Last weekend I popped across to Melbourne for the annual “Designex” trade show. The show exhibits all that’s new in interior design, building products, furniture design, new lighting technology and design, wall and floor coverings, windows, surfaces finishes and pretty much most else you could think of for interiors.
I noticed several interesting trends emerging…
- Wood’s gone matt – engineered floors, wall cladding, veneers, laminates that look like wood – all have a satin or matt effect to them – glossy polyurethane’s gone (yay) check out Hurford
- Fireplaces are big – gas flame as a feature – fake logs or driftwood, real combustion fires, gas fire with ducting linked to it for more heat efficiency. I even saw a beautiful cast iron pizza oven… check it out here
- Workplaces have gone mobile – we all know desk-spaces have busted out of their cubicles, but now they are doing yoga stretches too – lots of electronic leg systems that allow you to sit at a desk, and with a press of a button raise the surface to allow you to stand instead.
(Although the people who incorporated a treadmill on their standing desk and then photographed a woman in stilettos and a suit took it too far!) It’s called postural variation and is coming to an office near you.
- LED is really coming into it’s own. See Brightgreen. I saw lots of strip lighting that tucks invisibly into small spaces, resolved to avoid hotspots. I also saw a fantastic mesh LED for use behind translucent panels to make them illuminated for bars or splashbacks.
To our clients… stay tuned for brochures to be waved at you …… I seem to have found something relevant for all of our current projects, which is great!!
Interesting and useful – just what you need in a trade show!
