Contra Chair
The piece was designed as a focal point for an interior before it became a chair. It was designed to add texture, colour and warmth in a sculptural form that could define space.
Investigations into pleating fabric led me to new textured and stretch fabrics, which in turn influenced the form… as seams and pleats could be removed and the form could be simplified, allowing light to interact with the piece
The form looks different from all viewpoints, and has no defined orientation so it can be approached from numerous directions. The backrest also offers flexibility in the final use, as it can be curved inward or away from the user so the sculptural effects that can be created are increased.
